Week 2 Report
This week in class we spent some time solving a math problem as a group. The instructor asked everyone to try to solve the problem but did not give any instruction about a specific method to use. So after a short analysis of the question, I was able to come up with an answer. I was very confident in my answer and assumed that the rest of the class would most likely come up with the same answer using the same obvious method. But I have to admit that I was shocked when my peers began suggesting multiple methods for solving the same question, all resulting in the same correct answer.
This activity was an eye-opener for me. It helped me realize that students can process concepts differently and individual students may find one method more logical than another. As an educator, my job is to find ways to teach concepts and lessons to all students in the class. Considering the fact that all students are different and learn differently, this would involve preparing lessons with an open mind and a willingness to present multiple teaching styles. With this in mind, learning can be possible for all students, and can encourage them to achieve more with a positive outlook on schoolwork. Overall, it makes for a fun and happy classroom.

Hi Steph! I completely agree with your analysis of the class activity. I too thought that there was only one way of getting the answer, and was shocked to see different groups propose other ways of thinking. I can only imagine that is what we will see in our classrooms. One goal of mine throughout this course is to try to view a math problem many different ways. I feel as though I have been confined to my way of doing things and am very ready to open up as well!
