EQAO Problem Solving Activity

I would like to share my experience with my math Problem Solving Assignment for this week. The assignment involved observing and assisting elementary school students in solving two math EQAO questions. The questions I received were selected from the 2014 grade 6 testing period and involved probability and operational sense with word problems. To be honest, I was pretty nervous about having to solve these problems without an answer key, and then having to assist young students in solving the questions. Thankfully I was able to figure them out (at least I hope I did) and really enjoyed working with my students.

I found the following video very helpful in understanding the EQAO process:

I currently work as a private piano teacher and luckily have a bunch of students who were available to help me out with this assignment. I ended up asking a couple of my students to try these math questions with me during our free time at the music studio and I was honestly impressed with their work! Firstly, it felt a little funny to be doing math questions together since we only ever do music. But then it also felt natural to assume the role of the educator, and we were comfortable working with each other. Overall, both students did well with solving the EQAO questions, especially since I caught them off guard with math problems when they thought they were coming to music class.

Since I am such a proud teacher, I would like to share the work of one student who solved the EQAO question. As you can see, both questions involve different mathematical concepts and require a lot of background knowledge in math. Sure, this student required a bit of guidance and suggestions along the way, but I was proud to see that they were still able to complete the questions correctly.

Great work!
