Using Technology for Math

Technology is a fantastic tool to use with young students to keep them engaged, especially during math class. If you have access to iPads or tablets, there are loads of great apps that can be used for math activities.

Mathies
One app that was introduced to me is called Money by Mathies. This app allows students to select and count different denominations of money. It can be used as a learning tool for students to familiarize themselves with counting money, and can also be coordinated with a worksheet for students to complete on their own. The Math Curriculum outlines the specific expectation for Number Sense and Numerationread and write money amounts to $1000 (e.g., $455.35 is 455 dollars and 35 cents, or four hundred fifty-five dollars and thirty-five cents).

The following video demonstrates how to use the app. If you are interested in using this app with your class, take a look at the video below:

My Favourite No
The following video demonstrates a positive method for assessing and giving feedback to students. The teacher in this video assesses student work and then addresses common mistakes that she discovers along the way. This process is called "My Favourite No" because the teacher first points out good things that she has found in the mistakes, and then asks students to identify the mistake in the question. By doing this, students are able to self assess and also learn from mistakes. This is a clear example of Formative Assessment that can be extremely beneficial to student learning.
